EUROPEAN CUP winners with perennial rivals Liverpool and Manchester United will recall claiming the richest prizes in club football at a Wolverhampton pub next month.
Alan Kennedy and David May both have medals from going to the top table, during their playing careers, with the Reds and United respectively.
The duo will now headline an event titled ‘Vintage Reds’ at the Cleveland Arms Sports Bar, Stowheath Lane, on Thursday June 8.
Kennedy made all the difference with winning strikes for Liverpool in both the 1980 and 1984 European Cup finals, despite operating as a left-back.
Kennedy, who won two England caps, left Anfield in 1986 to join hometown club Sunderland, having started his career at Newcastle United. He retired in 1994 and is now aged 62.
May spent nine years as a squad player at Old Trafford, where he would win two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the now re-branded Champions League.
He became a regular in the 1996-97 campaign, making over 40 appearances, and netted in a Champions League quarter-final, as United hammered Portuguese outfit Porto 4-0.
Injuries over the next two seasons saw him fall out-of-favour, but he would play a part in United’s historic treble-winning season of 1998-99.
Again, he started in the FA Cup final, with Jaap Stam rested ahead of the Champions League against Bayern Munich, as United saw off Newcastle.
He didn’t play enough to warrant a third Premier League winner’s medal or feature in the Champions League run at all.
He was, however, still handed a winner’s medal from the latter after United came from behind twice in stoppage time to stun Bayern 2-1 at Barcelona’s Nou Camp. May was on the bench.
Event organiser Will Adamson said: “It’s a true honour to have these guys at the Cleveland Arms and the response has been excellent.
“Both will have plenty of stories and opinions from their careers and indeed the modern game. I’m very much looking forward to it.”
Tickets to see Kennedy and May start with standard entry costing £12.
VIP packages are £30 including priority seating, a buffet and a professional photograph with Kennedy and May – but only a handful of this category remain.
VIPs will be welcomed from 6pm, with standard entry from 7pm. Proceedings get underway from 8pm and there will also be a memorabilia auction and raffle.
